The Mares Apnea Instinct 50 is an open-cell freediving suit consisting of a jacket with a hood and trousers.
The new cut offers a comfortable and perfect fit, particularly elastic, with high thermal protection, compression-resistant, 5mm thick, trousers with a high waist, exterior lined and interior open-cell. To put on and take off the suit, use plenty of soapy water (fill a PET bottle with warm water and add about 1-2 cm of shampoo), do not wear any jewelry, and be careful with your nails.
"Open Cell" means that the inside of the suit is made of open pores: the gas bubbles trapped in the neoprene are cut open and act like suction cups on the skin. This minimizes the entry of cold water into the suit. Open-cell neoprene is soft and stretches easily, which is essential for freediving, as our chest and abdomen expand fully during complete breathing and compress at depth. A SCUBA diving suit is made from a different (more durable) material that is not flexible enough for freediving. You will only get the true freediving feeling when you wear an open-cell neoprene suit specifically designed for freediving.
With the Mares Apnea Instinct 50 Jacket, combined with the Mares Apnea Instinct 50 Trousers, you can practice static apnea in the pool as well as dive year-round in Swiss lakes in winter. For this, it is recommended to wear 5mm socks and gloves. A 5mm freediving suit is also ideal for the Mediterranean, while for tropical waters, I recommend a 3mm freediving suit.
You are welcome to visit me and try on the suit in different sizes. Bring your swim trunks and a towel, and you can lather up in the shower to try on various diving suits. It is also possible to combine jacket and trousers in different sizes. I would be happy to show you how to put on and take off an open-cell diving suit.
