Masks / Dive Goggles
When diving, a mask is not just an accessory – it is your window to the underwater world! Without a mask, vision underwater is blurry. Only a layer of air between your eyes and the water enables a clear view of the underwater landscape.
Freediving masks, compared to traditional dive masks, are low-volume. "Low-volume" means that the space between your face and the mask is as small as possible. Freediving masks fit closer to the face and are designed for minimal air volume. As you dive, the air in the mask compresses, and you need to equalize this volume reduction by exhaling air through your nose. The lower the mask volume, the less air is needed for this equalization – valuable air that freedivers prefer to keep in their lungs to supply their bodies with oxygen.
There is no universally perfect freediving mask, as the fit strongly depends on the individual face shape. It is advisable to test different models to find the optimal fit. A practical test involves lightly pressing the mask onto your face without inhaling. It should adhere for a few seconds. If you have a beard, shave a small area under your nose to improve the mask's seal. Stop by and try out various mask models!
Do not make the mistake of trying to inhale through your nose while trying on masks. This will make any mask stick to your face, but underwater, such a mask may not be watertight. Take your time during the fitting process – you will find a model that perfectly suits your face!
Before using it in water, it is recommended to thoroughly clean a new freediving mask to reduce fogging. Ideally, residues from release agents can be removed by running it through the dishwasher several times. Later, if black marks appear on the inner edges of the lenses, an occasional run through the dishwasher can also help.
